What Is BMR?
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the estimated amount of energy your body uses each day to perform essential functions such as breathing, maintaining body temperature, circulating blood, and supporting normal organ function. How to Calculate BMR
This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is commonly used to estimate BMR for adults.
For men:
BMR = (10 Γ weight in kg) + (6.25 Γ height in cm) β (5 Γ age) + 5
For women:
BMR = (10 Γ weight in kg) + (6.25 Γ height in cm) β (5 Γ age) β 161
What Does Your BMR Result Mean?
Your BMR represents an estimate of the calories your body would use over a 24-hour period if you were completely at rest. For example, a BMR of 1,500 calories means your body may require roughly 1,500 calories per day for basic physiological functions under resting conditions.
BMR should not be treated as your exact daily calorie requirement. Your actual calorie needs are usually higher because normal activities and exercise require additional energy.
BMR vs. TDEE
BMR and TDEE are related but they are not the same. BMR estimates the energy required for basic body functions at rest, while Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) includes BMR plus physical activity and other daily energy expenditure.
If you want to estimate your overall daily calorie needs, your BMR can be used as a starting point before taking your activity level into account.
