What Is Lean Body Mass?
Lean body mass (LBM) refers to the parts of your body that are not classified as body fat. It includes muscles, bones, organs, connective tissue, and body water. Because lean body mass includes several types of tissue, it is not exactly the same as muscle mass.
For example, if someone weighs 80 kg and has an estimated body fat percentage of 20%, approximately 16 kg would be fat mass and about 64 kg would be lean body mass.
How Is Lean Body Mass Calculated?
One simple way to estimate lean body mass is to use total body weight and body fat percentage:
Lean Body Mass = Body Weight Γ (1 β Body Fat Percentage)
If body weight is measured in kilograms, the result will be in kilograms. If weight is entered in pounds, the estimated lean body mass will be in pounds.
Example of Lean Body Mass Calculation
Suppose a person weighs 80 kg and has an estimated body fat percentage of 20%. The estimated fat mass would be:
80 Γ 0.20 = 16 kg
The estimated lean body mass would then be:
80 β 16 = 64 kg
Therefore, the person's estimated lean body mass is approximately 64 kg.
Lean Body Mass Formulas
Several formulas have been developed to estimate lean body mass from basic measurements. Common examples include the Boer formula, James formula, and Hume formula. Different formulas can produce slightly different results because they use different assumptions.
Boer Formula
For men:
LBM = 0.407 Γ weight (kg) + 0.267 Γ height (cm) β 19.2
For women:
LBM = 0.252 Γ weight (kg) + 0.473 Γ height (cm) β 48.3
These equations provide estimates and should not be interpreted as direct measurements of lean tissue.
Lean Body Mass vs. Muscle Mass
Lean body mass and muscle mass are related but they are not interchangeable. Lean body mass includes muscle as well as bone, organs, connective tissue, and body water. Muscle mass refers more specifically to the amount of muscle tissue in the body.
Why Calculate Lean Body Mass?
Tracking lean body mass can provide additional context when monitoring changes in body weight. For example, someone may lose weight while maintaining much of their lean mass, or their weight may stay similar while their body composition changes.

Lean Body Mass and Weight Loss
